It's a combination of things:
First it's the fact that he is such a public figure/house hold name.
Second, the media loves a story that has a celebrity tie in, so they publicize incidents like Mel Gibsons episode.
He was in a position that didn't help the situation, having made the Passion of the Christ and making the Jewish populace look worse then the bible describes.
I am sure there are more, but it probably could be pinned on the fact that he is a big name.

Because Hollywood run Jews and all the big ones in Hollywood are Jews. They will ruin his career because of this comments. Mel Gibson is genius and it would be sad for him and us to go. So what if he doesn't like Jews. Some people don't like Muslims, or Mexicans, or blacks. And why should Jews be something special?

It's more than just that. He's been taught all his life by his father that the Holocaust never happened. His father is a radical religious nut who started his own church, using it as a pulpit to spit out his own hatred of the Jews. His true colors came out that night when he got pulled over and spewed his hatred. Being drunk makes no difference - in vino veritas, right? I dislike both men. Neither one seems to understand that if it weren't for the Jews, they would have no Christianity.

Because we, as a race, are working hard toward tolerance and unity - and people who spout such divisive drivel are not welcome. Don't get me wrong - I have loved Mel Gibson for a long, long time. But to hear such hatred from his own mouth is a total turn off on a fundamental level.

mel gibson hates everybody. he has already expressed his hatred of non-catholics (he has openly stated that he believes his own wife is going to hell because she is anglican) and his hatred of gays (by mocking them on national television). its not such a surprise that he finally got around to expressing his hatred of jews.

'Cause he made it look like the Jews killed Jesus. Then he showed Jesus basically getting his *** kicked for well over an hour. Does this need to be explained further?

Because people are stupid. This is a weak excuse. People say racist things all the time, he just said the wrong racist thing, and eveyone gets their panties in a bunch.

Because his comments indicated that he has an irrational hatred of Jews. Considering he is an influential public figure, that is not the type of attitude he should present.

look up on youtube jackie mason mel gibson or google it... see what jackie says about it... he is a jew and i am a jew and i dont hate mel... a guy lives his whole life one way... has one slip up of racism well drunk... alcohol causes ZERO inhibitions... thank you.
