Sounds to me like the egg was fertilised. (That means that there was a chick foetus in there, and, as far as the hen was concerned, the rooster had goosed her.)
Fertilised eggs used to be quite common. These days they normally run the eggs under an infra-red light at the egg packing factory, and remove any fertilised ones. As I understand it, battery farm hens would be unlikely to meet up with roosters, so I would guess you had free range eggs.
Explanation (B): the hen happened to be hermaphrodite, and had self-fertilised (unlikely).
Explanation (C): you're actually living in the plot of a Stephen King novel.
...enjoy your fried eggs :-)

Its normal, Every once in a while blood gets inside the egg while it is being made by the chicken. I doubt it would be fertile with the way eggs are produced these days. Most Hens will never see a rooster in there life. I left link on the subject

Somehow it apears that you bought a fertilized agg and that was the chick fetus. Did you buy this egg from a farm? Egg producers do not let roosters in the henhouse but somehow that egg got fertilized.

I'm surprised people consider it "yucky" but think nothing about eating fried chicken which is the same thing.
I'm surprised that an egg would be fertile. Did you buy it from a farm?
