Did anyone ever have anxiety attacks fearing for the safety of their family? A few months ago I started worrrying obsessively about my sister. She is 18 and I became so afraid something would happen to her, I would get this weird horrible feeling come over me. It was so bad, I always worried about her but this was taking over my life. I couldn't go anywhere, I was always calling her when she was with her friends. I am doing better now, I am on Effexor. I haven't had any of those weird feelings since June, but I still worry about her and am afraid something bad will happen to her. I was just wondering if anyone else had a problem like this?

I have obsessive thoughts as well and every doctor I've seen (there've been a lot) has held the opinion that the only thing that will help for the thoughts is therapy. The drugs will help with the more severe anxiety that goes with the thoughts but they can't magically make your thoughts change. Personally I've just learned to live with them and try to ignore them. I would suggest you see a good therapist. Sometimes just talking everything out works but other times therapists know some good thought modification techniques. Good luck!

Once you realize that you're worrying about things you have no control over maybe the attacks will end. What I would do in the mean time is step outside and get some fresh air, it usually helps alot. Another thing is breathing into a paper bag. As funny as it sounds it helps you to reuptake CO2 that you lose from breathing out so much. Just relax, there is nothing worse than worrying about an occurance that will probably never happen... look at all the time wasted on worry. I hope this helped.

I have OCD and also anxiety problems. I too am on Effexor, 150 mg. I originally was on 75 mg., but the doctor had to up my dosage and I do feel better for it. I have had a really bad year with my 51 year old husband having a stroke in March and the death of 4 relatives. So, I guess besides the meds, you have to keep a positive outlook and believe me, that can be hard. So change the things that you can and don't worry about those things that you can't change It's really hard sometimes.

If you are worrying obsessively about your sister that something
would happen to her you need to ask yourself "why" are
you feeling this way. Is it something she is doing? They way
she acts? Does she know how to take care of herself?
Do you worry she might be with the wrong people? is her
safety at risk at work? at school? or otherwise.
There might be a reason, consciously or sub-consciously
as to why you are reacting this way.
Perhaps your own insecurities are playing in....have you
thought about that?
I have a sister, but I have never felt like this about her.
She is older than me, I love her dearly, but I guess I don't
allow myself to think those types of thoughts.
I hope the medication has helped.

My sister isn't 18 yet but sounds like a protective brother to me. May need to let her have a little space with her friends, and if these feelings persist you may need to see a psychologist. I doubt anything serious is wrong because we all have anxiety attacks and are protective of our siblings.

Speak to her about this. You may also find speaking to a goodlistner may help. ask yourself why you are so fearful for her - is it because you have fears for your own life and its coming out in a different channel?

I had the same feeling once for my husband. I realized that it was because i was depending on him too much. I discussed it with him and he helped me to get it over.
