I too receive SSDI and SSI for bi-polar disease. I did not run into any of the problems I have seen written about here though. I applied in Mid-Aug. 2003 and received my first check in the beginning of Nov. 2003. I never needed an attorney, just a psychiatrist. I didn't have years and years of documentation. At my first interview at Social Security, I was placed on Fast-tracking, a system SS uses to prioritize cases. The one thing about being disabled with a psychiatric disability is, your friend most likely will need a payee. Someone to handle her money until, or if, she is able to manage it on her own. I needed one for the first year, until my doctor cleared me. Social Security will make that decision for her. I live in CA. In this state you ONLY receive 1year back pay. If she has kids, 1 year back pay SSI for each. One year SSI back pay for herself. I do not think there is any state that will pay more, as SS is a Federal Program, not administered by state guidelines. She will also get Medi-care. You can e-mail me if she has more questions. Good luck, msmaryanne3@yahoo.com

It took me 3 years to get approved for SSI.
Depending on your State and County of residence it can take you longer. The Social Security appeals and hearing department in my State and County is backed up now for 5 years wait.
Yes you are going to need current treatment and Rx log.
They gave you an approx time line of 3-6 months however it can be alot longer. The fact is that SSA is looking at her saying well she has no current treatment nor is she taking any meds, they are going to most likely deny her.
Most who do apply for SSI for mental reasons will go through a 3 part denial stage. If this is her 3rd, then she is going to have to reapply (from the beginning).
My advice is to, get a lawyer now, seek treatment now, and get on meds. In that order. Even if SSA still haven't made a decision to date you lawyer can find all that info out and exactly where she stands.
Once she gets a lawyer, then get help, as soon as you leave the Dr's office call the lawyer with any info she has just received.
Inform the lawyer of the meds she just received, the lawyer will contact SSA and inform them of the change in her status.
The hard part of all this is the waiting, she is lucky that you are there to support her.

They can make you wait for months, even up to a year. They will take as long as they want but if you are approved you will get all the back pay since the date you applied. Same if you are denied and appeal and are eventually approved. So if your friend is denied she should appeal since some diagnosis' are automatically denied, but win on appeal.
