I seen a question asking is someone should throw a jew down the well and everyone gave negative comments (of course they should) and called the bloke racist.
However, if the joke was throw a gay / lesbian down the well you could bet most answers would be homophobic and people would be laughing and saying yes!
Is this not another form of rasicm against gay / lesbian people? And why do people think it acceptable to be this way.
Should homophobia not be taken more seriously?

You are right in everything you say. It is simply that prejudice against gay/lesbian is a bit newer perhaps, and we are more recently aware of our bigotry.

I am completely against a gay lifestyle, as I believe God has made that very clear. But my gay brothers and sisters are loved by God as he loves me. All of us should not be a part of bashing God's people.

You are the one betting that most people would prefer to throw a gay down the well. This is not a fact unless you actually ask a large number of people and the results agree. Why look for offense this way? Anyone, no matter who they are, who would want any person regardless of preference, religion, or race, to be thrown anywhere that could harm them, is simply not worth knowing. They are just mean and cruel. Why give anyone of this nature any further consideration. By the way, labeling a person homophobic because they don't support the gay life is also a form of prejudice. It makes the same sense to call gay people heterophobic because by definition, many are.

Come judgment day, and it's my turn to step up before the Big Man, I know he's going to review a string of events where I was not on my best behavior and his ten commandments were the farthest thing from my mind. However, while He is judging me, I hope he will note that I never judged another person because of his/her religion, race,or lifestyle. Maybe He'll cut me some slack for that. Two more thing... what two willing adults do behind closed doors is nobody's damned business. BTW, I'm straight.

Yes, yes, I don't know, and it depends...

Homophobia should be taken more seriously, but mostly only when the accusations are coming from Republicans or Libertarians. Most of the Democrats I know tend to believe that dishonesty and wrongful manipulation of data is okay, so long as it advances a liberal(socialist) agenda.

That's all i got.

I'm gay, if that's significant.

I can see your point , however , would you consider it racism if it was a joke on a gay web site about straight people ? although not a minority in them terms, it would be classed as racism, yet I think it would get a similar response as to the one youre mentioning. I also think 'gay & lesbian' is a disriminitory phrase as there shouldn't be 2 different words to describe male and female homosexuals, I dont use them both , I just say he or she are gay.

OMG! I never saw that one but that's downright cruel regardless of which group of people it targets. I believe it is taken quite seriously I think the downfall are those idiots posting racist or homophobic comments on answers. They are gutless and would not say boo to anyone if confronted. I would love to meet some of the cretins in broad daylight on a regular street. No dark alleys. Then we'll see how mighty and brave they are. Mind you I would like to meet some of the other folk on here as I think there are some seriously funny people on answers. Please try not to get worked up as you will get high blood pressure and become ill. Most of the people here at least are decent. As I reiterate, ignoramuses post inflammatory crap on answers as they have no-one and nothing in their likes!

I thinks its sad people would behave that way, and just sums up the ignorance of some of the users on this site
I've seen the most appaling comments made, usually from people who are totally illiterate. There was one the other day about using 4 p*akis as mudgaurds, and it was posted for hours before being removed.
Anyway, they say it's those that deny it the most who are really closet cases.

As far as I am concerned, discrimination against homosexuals is the same thing as discrimination against any other class of minority. It should share the legal status of other forms of discrimination. Instead of recognizing it for what it is, our Congress wants to legalize discrimination against homosexuals to throw a bone to their "fan base," in an action that stands no chance of passing judicial muster, but is merely an attempt at politicizing and legitimating discrimination against homosexuals... WHY!?
Homophobia... well... we do tend to fear what we do not understand. Homophobia is probably a normal, healthy reaction to homosexuality by heterosexuals. However, that does not make it any basis for a system of government.

I am6ft8" 320lbs and can look mean. if someone was something about gays I don't like I tell them I have a gay friend.I used to say if someone said something about blacks. I would say heh. I am a black man and proud of it.I am as white looking as a person can get.some men brag about beating up gay people.I don't like that at all.and tell them so. I don't like injustice at all.never have since I was a child I have been that way. people need to stand up to people and tell them its wrong to hate all of one kind of people. I don't like the way the Jews or treating the Palestinians for example but I don't hate all Jewish people.I was about killed by a black man but I dont hate all blacks. I was sexually molested by a man when I was seven years old. but dont hate all gays..Peace

Homosexuality is not a race. However, homosexuals are still able to be discriminated against. I think it's a sad world we live in because there always has to be some group of people who are being discriminated against. Once people get over people being gay, I can guarantee they'll focus their attentions to another group of people.

But it didn't mention gay/lesbian, so what's you problem with this?
I did not read the joke, and from your description, would have been appalled, but would have been for any group. YOUR agenda encompases specifically gay/lesbian discrimination, possibly justifiably.
Please don't make assumptions as to how I, and many others, would react.
