I'm near to my 40s and received a secret santa present only this week.
It was perfect - a scarf and glove set from Marks & Spencers with the tags still on so I can return it if I don't like/need it!
From the M&S website:
Gift Items
After you have received your gift, you can return any clothing or home furnishing item to us for an exchange or refund. as long as it is unused, returned in the original packaging and in a resaleable condition within 90 days of receipt of your gift. The refund will be a credit voucher receipt (to be used within 12 months).
Take the item to any UK Marks & Spencer store (apart from Simply Food, Outlet and Franchise Stores). We will exchange or refund with a credit voucher receipt at the current or last known selling price.

It depends on your budget and the lady. How does she dress? Is she quite trendy or is she a bit dowdy? Have a look at the jewellery she wears - is it fashionable, beads etc or is it 'proper' jewellery. If it's the former you could get her a pair of earings or necklace or bracelet in a ladies clothes shop such as Next, Dorothy Perkins or Accessorise (if UK). Try and get something similar to what you've seen her wearing. Alternatively a nice bottle of wine (a lady in her 40s would probably prefer a dry white or a red to a sweet or medium white) or some chocolates, but ensure she's not a dieter first. Basically observe her subtly and see what she looks like or talks about.

Good grief !!she is 40, she is not an alien from space.!!!! How about a nice assortment of teas or coffees? I like the beaded necklace idea from above. Movie theatre gift certificates are good too. It will give her an excuse to go and enjoy her gift with a child, her spouse or a friend.

What is the limit? Victoria's Secret has some cute gift sets (mae-up bag with lotions and sprays) which are under $30, and some as low as $14.

if it is the same as my place of works secret santa the limit is £10. I would buy either-
A bottle of wine
A diary address book set
A box of smellies
A box of nice chocolates (thorntons?)
A calender
Costume jewellery
or if you are abit more daring you could go get something from Ann Summers!

present vouchers are in many cases a competent wager, at sixteen each little thing is important, no factor getting earrings if she does not in many cases positioned on it, tub smellies are great if she baths yet no good if she showers, physique spray is an quite very own concern, and garments are a no pass, get the incorrect length she would be in a position to no longer be inspired!

I had to do that for someone at work I didn't even know. I bought a Blockbuster gift card for $10 (that was the limit)and some microwave popcorn and a chocolate bar--- wrapped it in a box and bow. She loved it.

An assortment of nail polish and lipsticks, with a pretty ornament to go on the package. A beautiful candle is nice. Really nice boxes of stationery is good. A gift card to a restaurant is always appreciated. Best of luck to you!!
