She's in HEAT! This is the only time they bleed. She is ovulating her eggs which will become fertile about 12 days after ovulation. Be very careful not to have her around any males for the next 3-4 weeks. Find a way to keep your dogs separated. Heats can last up to 3 weeks. Male sperm docks itself to the uterine wall inside the female and waits for the egg to become fertile which actually is a short time but the sperm can live up to 14 days. So best to keep her away from males and have her spayed after the heat is over. Vets will not spay during heat. Keep her comfy and make sure she stays very hydrated. Lay sheets on the floor to catch any blood but no worries, we've never had a dog's blood stain anything yet. Just clean it up with cold water.

You can buy some nappies/pants/pads for the dog while she is in HEAT (dogs do not get periods) so the blood doesn't go everywhere.
The male dog will want to mate with her so if neither dog is de-sexed, get them fixed ASAP. Meanwhile, you MUST keep them separated unless you want an un-expected litter of puppies.
EDIT: Female dogs come in heat once or twice per year every 6-8 months. When she is in heat, male dogs all around the neighborhood will be able to smell her scent and will want to intrude your property and try and mate with her.

Yes undesexed Female dogs get periods. It usually lasts around 4-7 days. This also means she is in heat. So nearly every male dog would love to meet her!!! For a party if you know what I mean.
Sammy might have already mated with her, in which case puppies might be on the way.
I seriously think you should get your female dog desexed!!!! If you don't intend on breeding. There are already alot of unwanted pets out there.!!!!!!!!!
As for the blood and mess, you can get doggie nappies. But also once again desexing would solve this too.
Sincerely
Tania

Yes, dogs do get periods and it should occur about twice a year. Usually, its just spotting but sometimes it can be messy. If you want, you can get her to wear an old undie which is much cheaper than buying a doggie nappie. But keep her away from other dogs during her period unless you want little ones to be running around soon.

Dogs do not get periods in the same way that humans do. When a human gets a "period", she is menstruating. Dogs do not menstruate. The time in a dog's cycle that most people consider to be the period is actually the time that the dog is in "heat". This is the time that the dog is most fertile, and if she mates during this time, she could get pregnant. If you don't want puppies, I recommend that you have your dog spayed at the vet. (And please do this, because there are so many homeless puppies already.)

when a female dog is in season (heat) she will bleed. she will be sending out chemical signals to other dogs that she is ready to breed. If you don't want pups keep her in side or on a leash when outside and think about getting her spayed because it is a slight possibility that she could get sick if she is not fertilized when in heat. Talk to a vet.

as everyone is saying your girl is on heat. my dogs will bleed for about a month, its not a steady flow rather spotting.
at the end of this period of time your dog will ovulate and the doy dogs will go crazy... for this whole space of time you need to keep her away from male dogs and bware of neighbourhood dogs, they will do all they can to get at her and have a go (if u know what i mean.)
I don't buy the dog nappies... instead i get an old pair of undies and cut a hole for the tail to fit through and fit them to my dog. it's much cheaper than buying the nappies and it's amusing for you to see your dog lounging around in undies!

Yes they do. You also mentioned that you have a male dog too. Keep them apart, even if he's fixed he still may try to mate with her. She wouldn't get pregnant, but your male may have trouble getting relaxed again. If that happens, then use some ice to bring it down otherwise it could be a pricey vet visit.

Yes, they have periods, usually about once a year. If you go to a petstore or look online, you can get special doggy diapers made for that exact purpose.
The best solution is to get her fixed, andif your male dog isn't fixed, buy the diapers or separate them pronto unless you want puppies later on
