To get back deafult icons like my computer, mu documents etc do this:
right click on desktop>properties>desktop>clcik customize> check the boxes next to icons you want.
Sometimes, windows have annoying feature called desktop cleanup which puts all ununsed icons in a single folder on the desktop.
To get back those, try to look for that "unused icon" folder in your desktop, if any.
But I guess your problem is of the first type of default icons.
Hope it helps.

Good answer, whoever posted first. That's a great tip for restoring the main desktop icons.
But if you installed programs and those shortcuts disappeared from your desktop, then that procedure will not work.
Don't worry, there is another way to restore the shortcuts.
If you know what those programs were, then you can restore them.
1. Obtain program name (figure out what you want to restore).
2. Find program location in C: (the hard drive you installed the program on). Use Windows search if you need help with this.
3. Once you know where the file is and what the file is named, select it.
4. If you have Windows XP: Right-click it, select "Send To" and wait for the next menu to pop up, and select "Desktop (create shortcut)."
5. Go to the desktop, and voila!, it's there! Rename the shortcut to the program name if you so desire.
If you don't have XP, let me know (use the edit button below your question) and I'll try to give you more help.
