In any industrial process handling flammable gases or flammable volatile liquids care is taken to avoid minimise sources of ignition. Examples are oil and gas production, oil refining and petrochemicals. There are occasions though when exceptions have to be made under carefully monitored and controlled conditions for maintenance or other reasons. There may be occasions when welding is necessary within process areas or access for vehicles but this is carried out on a 'permit to work basis' where special safety precautions are taken and documented.

I do not know any application for a pneumatic engine other than those used in pneumatic tools. Even in potential hazardous areas an electric motor can be used if the casing is designed to resist an explosion should flammable gas enter and cool the products of combustion sufficiently not to result in ignition propagating outside the casing. Gas turbines are used quite commonly in oil and gas production but care is taken in the location of air intakes and it would take a very large leakage indeed to result in turbine 'runaway'.
