Because with the first shampooing you wash away the oil, pollution and product that accumulates in the hair, these things break down lather. With the second shampooing your have cleaner hair and almost nothing to interfere with the lather sudsing up.

Because the first lather is like a rinse, rinsing the dirt and residue out of your hair. I just washed my hair last night and the first time it really didn't even lather but the second time it was really bubbly.

It has to do with the chemicals, dirt and grime in your hair. The first time around the shampoo just gets the majority of it out, therefore, the second time around, it lathers better.

Because the 1st shampoo is lifting most of the dirt and residue off of the hair and scalp. The 2nd shampoo continues the cleansing but has less dirt and residue. That's why it lathers better.

Because the first time, your hair had dirt, oil, and the shampoo does not lather well, then the second time, your hair has less dirt, and oil.

first wash breaks down natural oil, enviormental dirt and wax build up from shampoos and conditioners (wax, a major component found in most conditioners to help make your hair smoother/softer)

Second wash washes the residue left after the first wash. Which is less of course

On the 2nd shampoo you still have residue left in the cuticle of your hair shaft from the first shampoo, thus producing more lather.

The chemicals in the shampoo react with oil and dirt and make suds. Once that's rinsed away, the second application doesn't have as much oil and dirt to react with.
