Maybe it has something to do with the wavelength of the microwaves. The grill in the door has holes that are smaller than the wavelength, and that allows you to see inside the microwave but doesn't let the microwaves out. The same could be said for the ants. They're pretty small, and they might be smaller than the wavelength of microwaves, which would make microwaves ineffective at frying ants.

Nerves still firing most likely, but they were probably dead. If you were to cut off your arm it could twitch a little just like if you kill a spider and you see it's legs jumping around. Ants can't live in a microwave oven, one that's turned on anyway.

Microwaves work on water molecules mainly. When you heat things they expand. Most organisms are a large percentage of water. Ants have an exoskeleton so the water pressure builds up in the ant just like a piece of popcorn but more contained, so it doesn't pop. The ant would die unless it's only on for a second.

Why are you putting ants in the microwave? Have a little respect for other organisms.

Its theoritically isnt possible for ants to survive in any microwave oven when its ON.
I think an ant would burst when placed in a microwave oven which is turned on.

time and the amount of water in the ant. microwave cuase H2O to vibrate and cuase heat. if the ant has a vary smal amount of water and the timer is set to three to ten seconds or less the ant should still live but not for vary long. if it is longer the ant will die from internal hemriging.

A microwave's wavelength is about 5 inches. Maybe the ants are so small that they cannot pick up much of the energy.

They should not be able to survive if you crank it up and they will explode
