Northern Lights on the East side of North America, best spotes?

I live in Vermont and would love to take a drive to see the norhern lights. I was wonder where I would have to drive to and how long it would take from Burlington, Vt.

I thought that the only place to view the northern lights was in Alaska. And that would be a heck of a drive.
