We believe in the existence of heaven and hell even though presently we have never seen heaven and hell because the teaching of the religion says that heaven and hell are real and they can only be seen after the end of this world. This is faith.

It is not difficult to understand that religious people can believe in the existence of heaven and hell even though they have not seen them.

How about we look at some Atheists that reject religious teaching and only believe in the theory of science:

Some people believe in the theory of science that there may be other dimension in this world and for the time being we cannot go to this dimension because presently we do not have the technology. No one including the scientists and the Atheists have ever seen this "other dimension" but some of them still believe the existence of this "other dimension". Can we call them unscientific people just because they believe something that has not been proven yet?

Conclusion:
Has not been proven yet does not mean something does not exist.

Well because the idea appeals to the aspect of my human nature that seeks meaning. I am without knowledge of where I came from or where I am going, so I look to a divine revelation or to a person that can help me understand.

Yes heaven and hell are unforseen but we believe it based on our iman or faith. In islamic teaching we have six principles of rukun iman or faith pillars i.e :(1)believe in Allah the only one God no other god than Allah (2)believe in angels (3)believe in prophets as Allah's messengers (4)believe in holy books Zabur,Taurat ,Bible and Al Qur'an given by Allah as life guide (5)believe in life after death(heaven and hell) (6)believe in God's decree or taqdir. These heaven and hell had been seen by Muhammad pbuh when he was lifted by Allah to the 7 levels of skies.Muhammad met Adam,Abraham,Nuh.Moses and Jesus there in heaven. .Adam and Eve before dropped to the earth they lived in heaven. These stories had been spoken by Allah in the holy book Al Qur'an.So based on those faiths we should believe that after death we will go to heaven or hell depending on our doings in this world whether we have many good or bad doings..
