If it is that big, the puppy will have to have surgery to repair it. It will need to be repaired ASAP, but it is an actual surgery so the puppy may need to get a little bigger before it can be performed.
Umbilical hernias are usually caused by the mother yanking on the cord shortly after delivery of the puppy, it can also be caused by the abdominal wall not fusing all of the way. It isn't serious and isn't a real big deal, but will need to be fixed. Good Luck!

RE:
Puppy has an umbilical hernia?
I have a 6 week old Schnauzer with what I believe to be an umbilical hernia about the size of small grape. It seems to not cause any pain ect.... How old does my puppy have to be to get it repaired? I am taking the puppy to the vet this week to get his shots....can I get it done then, or does...

Congrats on the breeder that told you about the hernia. A lot of breeders don't tell the new owners and the new owners find out a the vet office. Hernias are not to serious. You didn't say if your dog was a male or female. If a female never breed her. Even if it closes on itself , which some do, the puppies can lay against it causing the hernia to open for the puppies to fall through. Not saying that will happen but there always a chance that will happen. The vet will fix it when they fix your dog. As for the person that said it was bad breeding that is not the case. As nothing to do with the breeder. It has a lot to do with the mommy biting the cord to close to the puppy. I have cut and tied my puppies cord, but she bit the cord afterwards. I had one of my pups not have a hernia when it was born but showed up after the puppy was sold. That was the first for me. The vet will tell you what your options are. Good luck to you.

Umbilical hernias in pups can clear up on their own but yours sounds large. Talk to your vet about it! Right away. The dangerous thing about a hernia is that it is a bit of intestine poking through the stomach wall. the bit of intestine being in the wrong place can be squeezed or twisted. It the hernia has pooh in it when gets twisted or squeezed the dog can get an infection and die. If the blood flow is cut off to it the piece of intestine it can die and cause an infection that could kill the dog. TALK TO YOUR VET! Pronto

My vet suggested my dog have it done at the same time he was old enough to be fixed. That way he went under anesthesia once, for both things. To get fixed and to have the umblical hernia fixed.

She is not a very good breeder than. As long as it is not causing pain and nothing is twisted your OK. The vet will check when you go into visit. Sometimes they just leave them alone. Congrats on your new pup. If hernia starts to hurt pup call vet A.S.A.P.

My dog has one. The Vet said if the hernia is soft to touch and not hard, it shouldn't cause any problems and does not have to be removed. If it is hard they will repair it when they neuter your dog.
