After all, people eat, smoke, drink, talk, play with their radios, read the paper, put their hair in curlers, watch tv..... All while they are driving and all of which are distractions from driving, yet noone is considering a ban on most of them.

If there were a way to ban make up and food and cigarettes from cars I would sign up and be all for it. People seem to think that driving a car at fast speeds while doing all the things they should have done before leaving the house is ok. I am scared to death of how little people pay attention to not only their car on the road but other drivers on the road. My friend is going to either kill herself or someone else because she'll be fixing her nails and calling her boyfriend and swerving in and out of traffic while blasting the music and I sit there squeezing the door handle and my heart is racing. I would like to see people drive with both hands on wheel and the music down low and everyone buckled up focusing on driving.

Things that require more than one action or sense are where people get in trouble. Talking alone is okay. You don't have to hold your friend up to your ear and cock your neck to be able to talk to him/her. Drinking just uses one hand. So does messing with the radio unless a person doesn't know their own vehicle.

I think the main drawback with cell phones is that it's too much distraction at once. Using bluetooth or headsets makes it okay, in my opinion. But without them, trying to talk and drive is just too much. I've done it before, but I get off the phone as soon as possible. It's just not safe.

my guess is u havent had a car turn left in front of u, or pull out in front of u on a bike from a driver yakin on a cell phone. i've had 6 drivers do this to me this season, 1 of which caused me to almost go into total brake lockup to get the bike to 5mph...was at 45 mph at the time, and the cager did this to me at a range of 35 yards. needless to say the pucker factor meter just about broke. cell phones while on the roll is just too distracting for about 90% of drivers. i've seen what appeared to be drunk drivers that turned out to be idiots yakkin on the phone. i also assume u havent had an idiot drift over in ur lane on the freeway...all because of a cell phone. i have.

No a phone call can take up too much of your concentration. I agree however that people also shouldn't be reading or putting their hair in curlers I HATE seeing that. I always give them the horn.

That's why they call it a Distracted Driver law.
If you say you were distracted, you're busted. Doesn't matter what, cell phone, pretty girl on the sidewalk...

No. It's a question of active vs passive. Conversations are active.
