1. Off-the-shelf sprays at pet stores.
2. Cayenne pepper (general repellant for keep dogs/cats). Put this on the tree or just sprinkle it on the carpet in that room.
3. Someone suggested nail polish.
4. Spray it with water when cat goes near the tree (takes too long in my opinion for this behavior modification)
5. Put a motion sensor in the room and plug a vacuum cleaner into the sensor (never fails), turn it on when you're gone. use a remote when you're home. Home Depot has everything!

Keep the door closed and the cat out of that room until the tree comes down.

Well you can't really keep them out of the Xmas tree especially if it's a kitten but I've always made sure to hang my ornaments (NON-breakable!) at least 1/2 way up the tree... yep! People always knew when they came over that I either had a little one or a 4 legged furry one! And something that deters them pretty effectively is a squirt bottle that you nail that kitty with every time it gets under there & don't be afraid of being persistent... cats despise water!!!!

Keep an eye on him/her and spray them with water when they go near it. My cat does the same thing every year, we usually have to lock him in a single room at night to avoid having the tree knocked over.

I would keep a water gun to hand, and at night either close off the room that has the tree in it, or close the cat into one part of the house, remembering to keep in in the part of the house that has it's litter pan!

spray the tree with green apple scent. They hate the smell and will stay away from the tree.
