I am applying to Beijing/Peking University for my Master's next year. I am also headed to Beijing this summer to study Mandarin. The thing is, they [Beida] are asking me for a Chinese name (they said said I should provide one OR ELSE they'll give me one! Crazy!). So, where do I start or could you give some suggestions? Thanks.

Well, I don't really want a Chinese name similar to my English name. I do want an authentic Chinese name that has a "common" feel to it but at the same time, still appealing. I know choosing a name is somewhat complicated in Mandarin... so can anyone help me to at least point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Though you don't really want to have a Chinese name similar to your English one, I recommend that you should at least pick a Chinese surname(mostly one character) that is pronounced like any syllable of your English surname. That'll make the name more like yours.

I don't know if you find it weird to have a Chinese surname, but I think you'll need one. Because Chinese usually call others with the whole name.(first+family name)

As for the first name, there are too many choices. And there are many things you can think about before you choose one:
1. you want a name with 1 or 2 characters?
2. if it's too difficult for you to pronounce (you wouldn't want to say your name wrong all the time)
3. you want it more serious (maybe one with a classic origin or something poetic) or you want it just nice and beautiful (without deeper meaning)
4. what kind of meaning do you want? (personality? philosophical? Nature?...etc.)

Basically, you can choose any one or two Chinese characters to make a name. There are many sources for reference on the Internet. But some are quite weird and funny actually, so try to ask a Chinese for advice before you make your final decision.

You CAN have an authentic chinese name regardless of your original name but the names should at least have some connections either by phonics or meaning.
I understand you don't want a straight phonetic sound for sound translation. So 2-3 key sounds can be selected to match commonly used chinese name words.
Provide at least first or last name for this or contact me direct at minijumbofly@yahoo.com

Blezinsky, Nowinsky, Navorsky are probably Polish (if they were of Russian origin they would probably be spelled with skiy at the end, whereas Poles just have ski) Stalin is technically Russian (i.e. it has the right ending), but as everyone knows from history, Stalin's real name was Dzhugashvili and he was Georgian. Strasser and Faizer are either German or Jewish. All of these are categories from an ethnical point of view, people with these last names could still be citizens of the Russian Federation.

Give your English name pls.
if you believe horoscope or Feng shui you can ask help from a fateteller. However, I think, yes, you can ask a question at somewhere else. here is not a best place to get serious answers.
