We had a discussion that black was the opposite of white(obvious) and yellow was the opposite of orange. I said "how can you have opposites of orange?" What is the opposite of gray? It doesn't make sense, so post your answers and why! Thanks!

The opposite of orange...blue. Need an exact shade? The color wheel is good, but to find the exact 'opposite', find a large piece of white paper. On one half, add orange paint (or whatever you are using for the orange). Stare at the orange blotch for 1 minute. Then, immediately stare at the white half...see the blue? That's the exact shade of blue that is opposite your shade of orange.

by opposite, they mean complimentary. Its used to describe a color, that when mixed with another color will make a neutral tone. Also, when placed next to each other they make the other color more vibrant (because of how you mind interprets colors, the same color will look different depending on what color it is next to).
Yellow is not the opposite of orange.
Here are the basic primary and secondary compliments:
yellow and purple
blue and orange
red and green.

Color can become a very confusing thing. There really is no opposite of gray, it is a neutral tone.

Yes we do make an imaginary circle . There are three main colours red yellow and blue . Orange is made of red and yellow and blue is not included in orange so if you like you can call it opposite .

According to the color wheel (which I learned in art school), the "opposite" or contrasting color of orange is blue.
The presence of all colors is black and the absence of all colors is white; both colors are considered neutral and therefore have no opposites on the color wheel. Since gray is a monochromatic color from black, it is also considered a neutral color and therefore has no opposite on the color wheel as well. I hope that helps.

blue because of the fact it incredibly is the opposing coloration - orange is made up of purple and yellow so its opposing coloration is the single no longer used contained in the widespread - once you out blue and orange mutually they war one yet another to your eyes interest os they look slightly 3-d as though spickles of each have been leaping out at you - it incredibly relies upon if the colour fits you - greater probably in case you're brunette with darkish eyes - I even have continuously discovered orange to be a dynamic beautiful heat coloration - greater so than purple. It doesnt have any unfavourable connotations.

We don't use the word 'opposite' when we talk about colours. But I know what you mean; the 'complimentary' colour for orange is blue. They fall opposite each other on the colour wheel.

It does make sense, because it is referring to a color wheel. The opposite color is on the opposite side of the color wheel. You should look it up, but basically, here are the opposites on the wheel:

red and green
blue and orange
yellow and purple.

You'll notice that each primary color is the opposite of the color made from mixing the other two primary colors.
