One has to learn English so that the person can go freely any where in the world. It is the International language spoken almost everywhere in the world. It acts as an umbrella to safeguard one's interests. A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the Internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of on line courses, which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

Englanders do speak real English. It was the American Revolution that changed the English language in America, so that one side could tell English patriots from American patriots. It's also why Americans have a fork in the opposite hand.
Come on guy, stop with the hate. :P

Do you refer to the toilet as the 'john'? What does an elevator do? It lifts people up.
Again, I refer you to Robert McNeil's book and series 'The Story of English'. It gives a clear history of the English language, and follows how it has diverged as it travelled around the globe.
Just remember the song 'Why Can't the English' from My Fair Lady. It goes, in part:
Why can't the English learn to set
A good example for people whose English is painful to your ears?
The Scots and the Irish leave you close to tears.
There even are places where English completely disappears!
Why, in America they haven't used it for years!
And those lyrics were written by an American!
British slang is just as valid as American slang, so...'belt up', as the Brits would say!

The real question should be why can't Americans spell?
English is not a static language, its beauty is that it is a very dynamic one, still taking words from other languages, coining new words and phrases and chaining the meanings of words now in use to convey something very different from their original meanings - to take just two Gay and Nice - look them up in a good historical dictionary and you will soon realise how dynamic the language is.
But why can't Americans spell and sometimes use archaic forms of English like 'gotten' Well just ask Mr Webster and his dictionary.
Just like when you use the spell check on this site it changes all the 's' into bloody 'zeds' 'Z'.

They speak what is often referred to as the Queen's English. That is actually the type of English most people from Europe, Asia, etc. learn as a second language. American's speak a derivative from that. One is no more legit than than the other, but certainly neither is "wrong."

Get off your high horse and learn to realize there are going to be variations in vocabulary from place to place in the many countries where English is spoken. It's what makes it a rich and living language.
Not everyone uses the same words for the same thing, so what? The differences are remarkably small after such a (relatively) long time.

They are the original English. When all the English came over to America, that's how it changed to how Americans talk.

In a sense your right. English, spoken by English people, is one of the worst spoken variants of English in the world.
If you look it up you will find that Ireland has one of the best spoken variants of the English language.
P.S. What the hell is an Englander???

People in England ARE speaking REAL English. Americans came from England. From their perspective, we are the ones who aren't speaking REAL English.
But hey, I'm not complaining; they got stuck with a crappy, small little island that has horrendous weather. While we, on the other hand, have this massive land mass.
Take that you snooty limey pucks!

I take it you are American. For your personnel record : England speaks for now several hundred of years and the US, how many ? less than 3 hundred? So the new baby should just learn from it's mum England before critizising their English.
