I have mild OCD, and stress does make it a bit worse for me. When I'm under a good deal of stress, I start freaking out about the house not being clean. It's torture.

So, yes, stress can make it worse. However, you will be hard-pressed to find a stress-free job. The best thing you can do is tough it out and not quit until you have a new job secured. Being unemployed is just as stressful as any job.

Stress worsens most mental and physical illnesses. Have you considered talking to your boss? Having been one for 13 years I find things work best if my employees speak to me. Have you ever actually been diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder? If so you may be able to seek special accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act. You should speak to your company's HR representative about the issue. If you think the job just isn't worth your health then quitting may be the right answer, but consider the possibility that you may have this problem at your next job and that it may be work facing it now. There are multiple medications available to treat OCD, but they require an in depth examination by your psychiatrist.

My niece has OCD and just started a new job. Her OCD got worse as well. She had to bring her curling iron in the car with her so she was sure she didn't leave it plugged in. If her cats were not watching her leave from her window, she was sure they fell in the washer. It is better now after a few months.

My clinical supervisor worked by the theory that people with OCD do the behaviors they do to alleviate stress, not necessarily stress related to the specific behavior. Like poeple that wash their hands a lot are not stressed about germs but actaully about something else. And yes, the more stressed, the likely you are to do the behaviors.

Yes, stress can greatly exascerbate OCD. Please don't quit your job though, unless it is totally unbearable. Hopefully, your therapist will be able to offer you some coping techniques. Good luck : )
