When I accidantally said something like "pu tao", all the Spanish Mexicans around me began to laugh. I know it means something in Spanish, but I don't speak Spanish. I really have no clue.

So, can you help me?

Well, first of all, I apologize in advance for every offensive word I´m about to say.

If what you said sounded like Spanish "puta", then it is a slang word to mean "whore". The masculine for that word, "puto", has another meaning in Mexican Spanish: it is a VERY offensive way to refer to a homosexual male. It can also mean "coward".

Both words can also be used as an adjective, in Mexican Spanish, to mean "f***ing" (used as an adjective as well). For instance, "my f***ing life" in Spanish would be "mi puta vida" (oooopsss... sorry about that!)

Maybe what you said sounded more like "emputado" (approximately m-pooh-tah-doh) which is the perfect equivalent to be pissed off in American English (sorry again)

Now, you should not worry about that. Once when I was learning English, I said, instead of TV, something like "tee-b*tch"! I was so embarrassed!

Yes, sounds like a very dirty word. Don't say it.
Besides, what do you mean with Spanish Mexicans ? Either you are Spanish or you are Mexican

Puta is a slang for a whore, Puto(the one you said/sounded like) is a Man whore. Depending how these phrases are used it has soooo many meanings/possibilities.

"puta" means prostitute, but is used more in a vulgar way. The closest translation in terms of use in the US would be 'b i t c h' (sorry if some people get offended)
