Have him focus on making presents for others. He can make a card for "Nana" or cookies or something you know, and have him give the presents early so he gets it out of his system - well a little bit anyway. I'm having mine make cookies this weekend and bring some to neighbors. Check out the churches for functions such as singing or plays that are age appropriate. It's hard on the little ones! So much excitement!!! Especially when the tree goes up.
Oh yeah and HIDE those presents!!

It depends on the age. If the child is aware of what he is doing then you give him/her choices putting the responsibility on the child for instance..."you can stop fussing or give the present back" Then follow through. Consistency is key. It won't take, but one time for him/her to realize that you mean what you say. An explanation on how to receive a gift is needed. Children do not know this instinctively, they need to be taught.

For one why is he crying about his Present? If it is because he didn't get what he wanted, I would explain to him that sometimes we don't always get what we really want but we have to make the best of it and try and appreciate that he only received the present due to someone loving him enough and to be thoughtful enough to buy him something they thought he would like and enjoy.

Tell him if he's going to gripe and complain about it that you'll just take it back. If he can't be appreciative of the gifts he receives then make him feel what it's like to have nothing for Christmas like so many other kids. You could even make him donate the gift to Toys for Tots or another charitable organization.

The best defense against whining is to give your child the exact opposite of what he is whining about. If it's a present you've already bought, put it away, or "give" it away. If you don't really want to give it away, take it to a relative or friends house.

The old Santa thing really came in handy with me. Tell them he is watching and no matter what he is still working on his list.
