I have been in at least 30 or 40 different in patient mental health facitlies and trust me..they are nothing like that movie..all diagnosis on one unit, all sexes, all religion, all colors, etc. it's not a place you go to just to take a break...if you are suicidal and need immediate help then please go but if you can get help outpatient..that's the best option. You are in a locked facility with no freedom, staff that treats you like you have no feelings or common sense most of the time and you are told when to get up, when to go to bed, when to eat, etc.. It's a place I would advise only as last option

I was in a short term facility when I got a bad reaction to a med. A short term facility is for stays of one day to one month. Most people can come to a grip with what's going on, and/or get on the right meds in a week or less. Most hospitals have a place like this, and I would ask your doctor for a referal to whichever one close to you he/she feels is best. You usually have to check yourself into the ER to get admitted, by telling them if you are suicidal, or a danger to yourself or others. This is the step before being committed long term, which is what the hospital in Girl, Interrupted is. Regardless of if you feel you should be committed long term or not, you will first have to stay in a short term facility. If you are lucky, that is all you will have to do. Committing yourself to a hospital or a psych ward is not done lightly. It is not a summer camp, or a vacation, but a place to heal. If you feel you are a danger to yourself or those around you, please go to such a place as fast as possible. Get someone to take you if you can't take yourself. If you need a break from work or school, take some vacation days, or skip some classes. If you need help, call your doctor, or 911, and they will find you help.

I don't think you understand just how hard it is to get admitted to a psychiatric ward nowadays. What with managed health care you'd better be seriously foaming at the mouth if you want to quality. Most hospitals have integrated the men's and women's unit together, but I'm sure there are some out there with separate wards. There's a good reason for this integration that I won't get into now, but you can make it a first day question if you get in. Do you just want the cool Angelina Jolie/Wynona Rider pseudo-lesbian experience with a touch of attempted murder? Are you seriously psychotic (out of touch with reality) and in need of heavy medication? Or do you just want to escape your boring humdrum reality? If it's the later try out-patient group therapy or partial-inpatient therapy. You get all the medication benefits, but you get to sleep in your own comfortable bed at night. Plus, insurance companies are a lot more willing to pay for these services.

Girl, Interrupted was supposed to be in the 60's/70's. These mental hospitals in the movie were very popular because parents then were much more careless and didn't want to worry about children, especially unruley ones. Many women that attended them didn't have serious mental issues. Just drug problems, rebelliousness, and other typical teenage issues. So, unless you want to be admitted into a serious psychiatric ward and not know when you will get out, have no control over your life, go to a psychiatrist.

I can almost guarantee that you aren't going to be able to find a "nice" mental facility. No matter your diagnosis you're going to be treated like you're completely insane. And lord watch over you if you're a minor. I've never been in an adult ward...and I've only been in at all once and that was because I had a horrible reaction to a medication while I was PMSing *my BPD and anxiety sky rocket then* and we couldn't reach my normal psych. The "staff", ie the under trained people who wanted to be doing ANYTHING else, told me that my parents had lied to me and I was never going to be let out. I was in with other people with "rage disorders" ie they attacked their infant brother with a butcher knife, drug addictions, actual mental issues *schizophrenia etc*, and suicide for various reasons. We were all told it was our own fault we were there. There was an autistic girl there who was only there because she had no one else to take her. Two of the girl's who were "long-term" had had lesbian affairs with each roommate they had had...and the doctors knew about it and did nothing. One girl had been raped by her brother-in-law...and was only being treated for suicide...no one was addressing the fact she wanted to die because her sister blamed her for her rape and was staying by her husband. I have anxiety and bipolar disorder....and I hate hospitals...they terrify me to no end. I had a panic attack about once every six hours and got yelled at every time for being melodramatic. Within 12 hours I went from not being religious to praying constantly just on the off chance that God could hear me. If you can avoid inpatient then do. I can't think that adult units would be any better than the juvenile ones. There is almost nothing on this earth that would make me subject myself to that again. If you don't go in crazy, then you'll come out crazy for sure.

are you seriosly asking about mental wards to go to or are you just interested in a movie prop? because thats all it is in that movie, just a prop. real mental wards are NOT like that. anything you see in a movie you CANNOT take seriously as far as real life goes. if you are really seeking help, please contact a professional doctor who can really give the help you need, and they can recomend a good mental facility if you really need one. your right mental stability is NO JOKE!

Try the one in North Bay, Ontario or go to a women's shelter where men are not allowed, ask your local health unit about it or your local police.
