I ran away when I was little to this little house that my mother built in the backyard. I took some food with me. However I had to go back home when it turned dark and I realized that my little house didn't have any electricity or lights.

I was a young teenager or pre-teen at the time. My mom and I had a fight one morning before school. She left for work about 1/2 an hour after I usually got home. I saw her carpool person pull up (I was behind the house) she saw me and figured I was safe.
My dad was due home in about an hour. I went in the house, packed my underwear and girlscout cookies (and I'm sure I packed other things, but those are the specifics I remember) and I was going to go live in this abandoned shack in a wooded area about a mile from the house. I hung out there for a while and decided it might get cold at night (Wisconsin) so I was going to go live with Grandma, who lived probably 45 miles away.
I made it out to the highway; I think I was even walking in the right direction. The next door neighbor happened to be driving on that road, and I never quite made it to grandma's.
Oh--and Mom left work because Dad called worried since he knew we had a fight that morning, so I had a lot of explaining to do.

Yes I ran away when I was little. No I didn't come back when I was hungry. I only got as far as the corner of my block and just stood there and eventually started crying. A neighbor saw me and took me home. I got stuck on the corner because my mother had always told me not to cross the street without an adult.

I ran away once when I was little. We lived by a river and I walked to the edge and thought about swimming it. Then I remembered that I couldn't swim and went home. HA HA.

I didn't run away exactly, but when I was about 3 or 4 I went off on my own adventures a couple of times. Once I was naked on a tricycle. Luckily my grandmother's friend spotted me about a mile from home. Another time I climbed into somebody's car (people could leave their windows down in those days) and messed with all the buttons and steering wheel. My mum beat the bejesus out of me when I got back home.

Sounds like you have a very loving mom. Willing to let you step out on your own but also willing to be the safety net under you if things go wrong!

I did run away from home once. I was mad at my mother and told her I was going to run away. She said ok. So, I took my dressed( hangers and all), my dolls and headed out. I went 3 houses down from where we lived and sat on the church steps. Every one in town(we lived in a small town) called my mother and ask her if she knew I was sitting on the church steps with my clothes. My mother answered "yes, she ran away from home." My brohter, who is 1 1/2 years younger kept coming up and wanting to know if I was ready to come home. I kept saying NO. Finally, he came up and said "mom is really, really sick" It scared me to death and I grabbed dresses and dolls and ran home. Only to find Mom in the kitchen. I promised to never, never run away from home again. And I didn't.
On 1/2/06 we lost my mother and it has been the saddest time of my life. I spent days at the hospital with my mother and we had a chance to talk and spend some very special time together. I am so glad that I went home that day to stay! :-)
