Christchurch. Easy to get around and lots of student life. Auckland is too big (too much of a city) and Wellington is too spread out. I would actually choose Dunedin, then Christchurch.

Well I've studied in both Chch. and Wgton and lived in Auckland. Christchurch is cheapest and there are some cool places to live just outside the city with a cheap rural lifestyle. Places like Stewart's Gully, Rolleston, Ferrymead, and Prebbleton. Christchurch used to be stodgy and boring, but now it's got ethnic eating places and all the other attractions of the two other centres. But in some ways Dunedin is an even more attractive place to study than Chch.

Dunedin is definitely the ultimate student city in NZ, and the University of Otago (which is in Dunedin) has an excellent reputation. However, if you have your heart set on AKL, WLG or CHC, go to Christchurch if you're on a limited budget. AKL has great nightlife, malls, restaurants, but you either have to live out in the suburbs and spend a ridiculous amount of time travelling to and from the city (which is where the university is situated), or pay painfully high rent to actually live in the CBD. I'm not too familiar with WLG, but I suspect it is similar to Auckland.

Have lived in all three and I would have to say Auckland.
All three cities have their good points but from a student's point of view I'd opt for AKL.
It has great campus life if you are at Uni. But there is just a wider range of everything I spose because it is a bigger city. More good bars and a lots of live music and events. There is a larger range of resturants, everything from cheap eats to silver service. More Westfield 'malls' if that's your thing (also has the new Sylvia Park), but good outdoor shopping in Newmarket and round High St in the city. There is bigger crowds and more traffic in Auckland though, but there is a pretty big student population in the central city, which is cool.

You haven't mentioned Dunedin. That's where I would go if I was a student. It's legendary for its student culture, and you even get to burn couches.
