Religion was a good thing for it's time... but it's time is passed.
When mankind existed as rather isolated groups of people, religion was great as a form of government where no government existed. It was a good teacher of those who needed guidance. But... times have changed.
God is no longer the source of peace between people but has become a divisive instrument with strength enough to undermine governments.
I believe that it's time to bring all the God-based religions into a single accord and settle their differences peacefully... and then somehow disband them before they take up sides all over again.

POST SCRIPT to radioacti...: You haven't read Soviet history with accuracy... and you don't seem to understand Joseph Stalin at all. He was, in fact, a theology student, a Christian and he was expecting to enter the clergy. He never claimed to be an Atheist and probably wasn't one.
The "cleansings" and "purges" you've loosly mentioned were politically motivated for two basic reasons, first, to supply the nation with a continuous work force of criminals (who were worked to their deaths in most cases) and second, to insure that counter revolutionary groups were destroyed before they could take root; the "purges" were not based on religion at all, but rather happened across all religious lines. But yes, the Soviets saw the economic uselessness of religion and they saw the real political danger of religion so they did, in fact, ban all religions. (That might be a wise thing to try and establish around the world today.)
Religious belief is emotionally irrational and can easily become the leadership for undermining and misleading government... Take a look at the current Middle East today for some fresh evidence of this tid bit of truth.
Think about it. This question points to a very serious problem and at it's very foundation is merely the idea of what God is.
Pitifully trivial, isn't it?

Much of the years of wars and death of many have been for the purpose of conquest ... conquest of land, conquest of wealth, and conquest of peoples.
Sadly, some of the wars and death also have been caused by religions.
If religions were abolished and people would follow only the Faith taught by the Creator .... but religions have not chosen, yet, to quit their fight against the Creator.

religion might be a beautiful thing but it has a very ugly side b/c it's been used for ever to control the masses. Maybe it's not the religion... maybe it's the ignorance of men.
Seems to me that things would be just too simple if people started believing in God and quit believing in religion.

Religion is responsible for most of the wars and deaths. A true believer in God, Jesus, and the prophets would never condone that.

The communists said what you just said. So then they tried to exterminate everyone who was not an atheist. Stalin killed 30 million white Christians in the process.

My faith is worth fighting for. It is what will determine my eternal destiny. Other human beings are worth fighting for and their ability to worship as they choose.
