I think that the best gift you could give a new doctor would be your love and support. Just let him know how proud you are of him.

If he is graduating as a Dr. Then he already has a stethescope, exam kit, dr's bag, and a white coat. What would be better is a gift that he can use in residency, or books to study for the last step of the board examination.
What is his specialty?? If surgery, surgical references might be helpful...(I recommend Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery) If Family Practice, then reference books that will be helpful to a family physician. Barnes and Nobles has several reccomendations under medical references, and they include reviews from users.
Last but not least, he does have a lot of money in student loans... It is best to pay off private loans as soon as possible, but federal loans can wait (they are at a much lower interest rate) He can save some money for residency, X -mas, etc.
Goodluck!!

If he is a medical doctor, I think a very nice Litman stethoscope with a microphone built in. It will cost you in the hundreds of dollars. I am a nurse and work with docs who love their micro phoned stethoscope.
12/14: I just thought of something else. Almost all of the physicians I work with carry a little hand held computer. Its called a palm pilot. They keep track of their appointments, pts and meetings on these little things. They are really handy. They can be as cheap as $50 or as expensive as $400 bucks.
Also. Since they have to have their shirts pressed and most of them wear a lab coat, you may consider a dry cleaners gift certificate or of course, you could go iron his clothes for him.

i am thinking maybe really nice cufflinks? now that he is a doctor i am sure he'll have some black tie events coming up. this will signify him moving up in the world - the next step in his life.
how about a high quality writing pen. we always tease the drs in my family that they are pen snobs. they have the heaviest pens but they do write beautifully. you can get them with all kinds of medical details on them. he'll be writing plenty of prescriptions so he'll definitely get use out of it.
a white coat? he'll need plenty of those. having a special one from you might be meaningful. his first one as a "real" dr.
a nice watch? something professional looking that has some substance to it. nothing wimpy.
hope this helps. i can only imagine how proud you are! good job to him and you! SD

In the Philippines, doctors' clinics are decorated so tastefully. In fact these doctors seem to be competing with each other for their clinic interiors. I think a very nice painting will make a great gift. Something to hang on his clinic wall.

Anything to help him to relax after making rounds in the hospital for countless hours: a massage chair, gift certificates to real good restaurants, a week's vaction, or a couple of night's stay in a good hotel to just relax and unwind.
