I've been a Navy Recruiter for almost 3 years now. Most of the folks I enlist in the Navy are people who went online and requested more information about the Navy. Sometimes I'll pick up my school list and call people to see if they'd be interested in getting information. I'm not aggressive at all with this. I'm the most laid back person you'll ever meet. Why is it that as soon as I say that I"m from the U.S. Navy a mom or dad will start cursing and screaming and saying they're calling to call the police or their lawyers. A simple not interested will suffice. I can't understand why someone would be so disrespectful to a person presenting a great opportunity for a job, career, free education, travel, and many other benefits to their family and friends. Anyone?

Fear of death of a loved one tends to make people irrational.
I got a ton of calls when my son was a senior & nicely said no until the third time, then I would expain that I would pay for college myself. (Clinton was newly elected) Funny thing is after college & 2 years of working afterwards, my son joined the Army . Now he is an Army Ranger & Captain. LOL - I should have let the military pay for college.

Hey a lot of recruiters ruined the recruiting name for the good recruiters..

You see on the media that high school kids bringing in secret cameras to their recruiting session and hearing BS like they aren't going to Iraq or that we are pulling out and such.. Wow...

There maybe some good recruits out there, but I lost all faith in recruiters, I go to the veterans now days... So maybe parents are afraid that their kids might be lied to by those bad recruiters and end up joining and deeply regretting it and end up losing a limb or two...
There are other ways to serve your country then to join the military such as teaching GOOD or being a doctor and such. But I appreciate what your doing as long as you tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I hate recruiters who cover up things like "You have a chance your going to be deployed to Iraq" with sugar coated things like "Oh you might be deployed to Iraq for a week or two..."...

Maybe their parents are AFRAID, key word afraid. I would be proud that my son goes into the military but I would be very afraid since I want to see my grandsons someday and such and the military never guarantees anything.
But yeah the people who swear at you and starts threatening you are plain disrespectful, I agree with you, a simple "sorry I'm not interested, I'm not interested in the military etc etc etc" would be respectful enough.

OK as a wife of navy and mum of USAF.......let me tell you that it actually gets quite offensive when an ex directory number is given out by the school to some one that really has no need and or right to it...................in your case you are Navy and that's great BUT we had a nightmare getting rid of the Army guy so maybe you are the 4th service to call and harass them and like us we had had enough......................I actually went to the office and told his chief / Sgt [whatever] that IF he called one more time then I would be more than a little fed up...........................and this was still going on after he signed for the USAF, in fact he has been in a year and we still get mail regarding him getting a REAL job......

As my daughter is now coming up to that age , I have actually requested via the school that i will hold THEM responsible if my number is passed out again....................she has already made her choice and again its the USAF.............

I would hate your job cause any mom or dad doesn;t want there son or daughter going in the navy.I would be proud if any of my children would apply but alot of moms and dads just can;t give up the control that is what it is ;it scares them for sure. When people get scared they say weird things.do not take it personal your doing good work keep it up.

because they are ignorant. they have heard outrageous stories about the military; making it sounds like recruiters are standing on street corners luring the dumbest, poorest clueless kids(oh yeah, and you only recruit kids, no willing adults)to be in the service.
our military is the best in the world and does not get the respect they deserve.
do these people not read/watch news? at least we ask for volunteers. we don't put guns to the heads of middle school boys, force them into ther backs of trucks and train them to strap bombs to themselves.

Because they want the "Wall" guarded, they just don't want THEIR babies doing it. It's okay for someone else's son or daughter to put their lives on the line for our Country, but not THEIR child. These parents think you are going to brainwash their child into flying off to come foreign country and die in some hopeless war, when in truth, the child contacted YOU first. They don't ever see the need for our Military until something awful happens, then you guys get blamed. GRRRRR!

And thank you for all you do.

Easy. Because of the state of the world these days, Iraq and terrorism, and the perception of stop loss as being almost akin to slavery, parents are moved to be overprotective of their children, especially if they aren't happy with the current government officials, for example the President. They're just afraid their kids will be injured or killed. Don't take it personnally, you might just have to tweak your pitch.

It is because people have lost respect for thier nation, they want all of the freedom, but don't want to pay the price for it.

If there was a draft going on, they would love to hear from the navy or air force,
