By the tone of your question it looks like a history lesson on powerplant progression. Try history channel website or the military channel for details but basic topics could include war uses obviously. Types of powerplants were developed like pistons that oriented differently to overcome inverted flight that caused oil to flow away from lubricating the cylinders. The rotary engine (like WWI) reduced vibration and had a higher power to weight ratio (which is good for climbing into the sun blinding your opponent). Of course jets were used to increase speed and range. This came about in WWII by Germany wanting to develop jets that could be put aboard intercontinental bombers to attack the U.S. This info should be a good start and I'm sure you can elaborate on these topics with details to make 10 pages. If more info is needed to fill up space, look up scramjet and ramjets as well and maybe even rocket types with different nozzles. Look in wikipedia also. It will explain how these engines work.

Go to your local library and try to find the A&P study books for powerplants, or if you feel like blowing a few bucks you can probably get them on line. Jeppeson makes a full line of aviation material for the course to become a maintenace person, but these books have history and basic operating theory (beyond suck, squeeze, bang and blow) for all types of engines you'll find on any aircraft.
