More likely his anal glands, glands below the anus with smell secretion fluid in them, are impacted, sounds strange, but a vet or a groomer can fix it in five minutes. They might also teach you how to do it at home, though it can cause damage if you don't know how, so get advice first.

dog dragging it butt on the floor can mean several things. It can mean the dog has worms and they are causing an itch. Dogs have glands on either side of the anus these glands produce some type of secretion, really I am not sure of its purpose unless it is a scent gland but at any rate if these glands become filled with the substance they secrete the dogs behind is uncomfortable and they try to get the goo out by dragging their behind. Usually a vet needs to express the secretion and it is very, foul smelling and if it gets on anything you can hardly get it rid of the odor.

The up shot of the whole thing is that dragging the butt on the ground is not a normal behavior, it means your dog needs medical attention.

Most of the time when a dog drags its butt on the floor their anal glands are full there for they need to be popped, if your unsure how to pop them correctly a vet can do it. Its possible your dog has worms as well, watch her stools some times worms will come out with the stools. I guess its best to bring her into the vet to get checked out that way you will know for sure whats going on with her.

I have two beagles who about every 6 months do the butt dragging. I just take them to the vet and they express the anal glands and the boys are good for another 6 months.

One vet suggested I increase the fiber in their diet, a teaspoon of pumpkin a day, to firm up their stool. That way when they go, it helps expell some of the fluids. It seemed to help.

This usually means that the anal glands are full or infected. You can bring him to the vet to have them secreted. I reccomend a vet over a groomer because if they are infected, the vet could give you antibiotics. Where as if you go to a groomer first, you have to pay for that and then pay for the vet as well if there is an infectionl. I don't reccomend you do it yourself because not only does it smell extremly bad, but you could damage those glands if you don't know what you are doing. Good Luck!

have you noticed that when a dog meets another dog it smells its backside? This is because there are glands either side of the external anal sphincter that produce a thick greasy secretion that has an individual smell. So dogs can recognize their doggy friends and mark their territories too.
Unfortunately these glands often get engorged with the secretion and they irritate and itch. the only way the dog can relieve the itching is to rub its backside against the floor or wall.
You can help your dog by taking it to a qualified dog grooming service and they will relieve the secretions or better still take it to a vet.

In the majority of cases i would say that yes that is a good indication of worms. However it doesn't always mean that at all. What it does mean is that their butt itches be it from worms, gland problems, stuck poop on their butts, or even just plain and simple as that they have an itch. Could be from any number of sources. If they do have worms the chances are you would see them in their stool but you should take a sample to your vet for diagnosis to be sure.

It can mean worms but also its a sign that your dog has blocked glands in his anus and rubbing along the ground is his way of trying to express them himself.. If this continues for a while you will need to take your pet to the vet for either worming tablets or for his glands to be expressed or it can cause a very nasty and painful infection..

It could mean he has worms or it could mean he has irritated scent glands which need cleaning, go to your vets and they should be able to show you have to do this, ask for the method that involves not sticking your finger up the dogs anus.....be prepared, when the glands are cleared the odour that will come out may be throw up material!

It might. It might also mean that his anal glands need expressed. Dogs that are kept inside (aren't able to "go" whenever they feel like it) are more likely to have their anal glands build up with fluid. It is some nasty smelling stuff, let me tell you. Your vet can express the gland, making Fido comfortable again. Some dog groomers will do this also.
