Because some Americans see it as an infringment on their time to have to try and figure out what is being said. But not all Americans are like that. To give an example, say it's lunch time - 3 or 4 people pile into a car and go to McDonalds for some fast food. Emphasis on the word 'fast'. There is only so much time off for lunch. Then as they go thru the drive-thru, the person taking orders cannot be understood very well. The people in the car are at a certain 'level' of a mood. If they need to change that mood, it interferes with their rythym. It's not what they were expecting to have to do. When they go to order the food, it is barely thought about. It's a sort of a 'matter of fact' action. When they have to stop and try to understand what is happening it is no longer a smooth transition. I'd say if the same people stopped by at a time when they did not feel rushed, it would be a lot different story. I think. You can't go by me, my wife does not speak English very well and I'm used to it.

Some people get very, very frustrated and actually embarrassed and frustrated when people do not understand them. If you didn't understand them and they were rude, it's their problem and not yours. However, if you're going to work or study in the US, people expect you to know some English because it's the only way you can function. There are plenty of native English speakers in the US who are not very literate or articulate, so don't worry about it if someone gave you a hard time. Everyone can improve.

First, please be fair? I'm sure many are as you say, but not all of us. Some of us enjoy diversity and I respect that fact that others speak more than one language, unlike many Americans who only speak one.

America is the land of plenty. As such, many of us are spoiled and we want our way. I was in Paris last year and I observed an American get rude because the Frenchman didn't speak good English. So I understand how you feel.

I just ask that you don't judge us all by a few jerks. Most of us are okay.

Because all of our ancestors who also came from other countries 2 to 3 generations (or more ) ago were able to learn proper English and not have their phone bills translated into their native language. Instructions on how to put things together were all in English -- not in 1 or more languages. We learned....and survived. When we did speak in our native language it was mostly in the home or else we spoke in hushed tones if used in public. We were proud of our English when we learned it!!!!!

I personally don't have an issue with this. Keep trying! What I do not like is people who don't even bother to try to learn. That shows an arrogance that I can't stand.

because jerks like that have too much $, or at least more than the non-english speakers, so they think they're above these people and that they should be accommodated. but as i said, they're jerks.

We don't mind if you can't speak it well. We mind if you don't even bother trying, especially if you live here. If I were to move to say Italy, I wouldn't expect them to adapt to my language. I would try and learn theirs.
