My daughter is 10 months old. I have been breastfeeding her exclusively until she was 6 months and now she is learning to eat table foods but I'm still breastfeeding her. Is it normal that I don't have my period back yet? Must I always worry that I might be pregnant?

I am on the "mini-pill" but I don't really trust it because they say it isn't as effective (but safe for baby) and I'm bad at taking them at the same time each day. We use condoms.

It is normal that you have not gotten your period back regulaly yet. It may not start at all until after you wean completely.

However, you do ovulate and can become pregnant before you ever "see" a period. Breastfeeding stimulates the sex hormones, which in turn stimulate the milk production, so breastfeeding can make your periods irregular or even absent.

Once you stop breastfeeding, it can take from a couple of weeks up to several months for your periods to re-establish themselves - especially if they were irregular before you conceived.

I personally nursed my son for the first year, and did not get my period until he was about 6 1/2 months old.

It started back up when he started to eat cereal, and solid foods. Of course he was a moose (9lbs 4oz 23" long when born) He is now 13, and 6' 2" tall.
The only advice I have regarding pregnancy prevention, is to make sure your other half uses a condom each time. Not fun, but better that, than another on the way

You could go for months as long as you keep breastfeeding, Too bad you won't get a card in the mail telling you you're about to ovulate. Most women get a clear, kind of slimy vaginal discharge during ovulation, if this is something you wouldn't notice, and you don't want another child, you should consider some form of chemical free birth control

i am in the same boat as you..i stopped nursing my daughter a little over a month ago and still havent received my period..i have been told that it is because of the mini pill..it doesnt have estrogen in it, which is what makes it safe to use. and supposedly with out the estrogen, there is no period..i have been worried i was pregnant as well..took a test and it came back negative.. so guess the pill is still working since that is the only source of BC we use..if you are really worried, make an appointment and get switched to a normal BC,thats what i plan to do..good luck :)

I got mine back 2 days before my daughter's 1st birthday and we had the same BF pattern. With my first child, it came back 13 months after he was born.

Yes it is normal for you not to have it, but it does drive you crazy worrying about pregnancy.

You know....that's a tough one. But, with my first, I nursed him till he was 15 months and I had my period thru the entire thing. So, I don't think there is a solid rule of thumb on this one. Are you on the mini pill or just condoms?

My doc said anywhere up to 12 weeks would be the normal time frame. I got mine immediately after I gave birth (for 2 weeks!!) - you should probably see your doctor about that, for your peace of mind as well!! Good Luck!

PS I breast fed also, for about 15 months.

based on my experience and knowledge, when one is using LAM..usually it is very effective on the first six months..but after that, its not safe to use anymore.you should have your period by now or you are pregnant.try to consult your OB for it.

I'm not a woman nor do I have any desire to be one and know what periods are supposed to be like.

Can you try the ept to see if your pregnant?
