Here's a list of the names and titles of Satan. He is a real "person". Interesting question.
Satan - The name means "adversary of God and man, accuser, and opposer." Satan is the opposer of God, believers, and that which is good. Satan is also a deceiver in that he can appear as an angel of light to aid him in his work as the adversary of God and men. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us Satan is the adversary of man, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." Satan is also the accuser of mankind as seen in Rev 12:10,
"And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night."
Devil - This name means "Slanderer, Accuser, Deceiver." Rev 20:2 shows us that the Devil, the Serpent and Satan are one and the same,
"And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years"
Rev 12:10 shows the roll of the Devil as our accuser,
"And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night."
Beelzebud - This is the name of the prince of the devils or demons, another name for Satan.
Matt 12:24,
"But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils."
Belial - This is another name for Satan that means good-for-nothing or worthless or hopeless ruin.
2 Cor 6:15,
"And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?"
The Wicked One - A name used by Jesus to describe Satan.
Matt 13:38-39, "The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels."
Prince of This World - Satan is called the prince (or ruler) of this world meaning that he is over this world system.
John 14:30,
"Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me."
Satan is over politics, business, and society. Satan is behind the happenings in the world today, leading the world in opposition to God's plan and God's people. But the prince of this world will soon be cast out.
John 12:31,
"Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out."
The god of this world (Age) -Satan is called the god of this world in
2 Cor 4:4,
"In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."
Satan is the ruler (prince) of this present world. He is currently blinding the minds of the unbeliever, working against God's plan. This is one of the reasons the Apostle Paul calls this an evil world in Gal 1:4,
"Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father."
Satan is the evil one and is responsible for the evil in today's world and this world will never improve until the time has come for God to remove Satan as the prince of this world. Then we will have Jesus Himself as the ruler of this world and a restoration of good.
Prince of the Power of the Air - Satan is not only called the prince of this world but the prince of the power of the air. This is referring to his ruling over all the demonic hosts (the fallen angels) who operate in our immediate atmosphere working against God's plan. Writing to the Christians at Ephesus the Apostle Paul wrote in Eph 2:2,
"Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience."
That Old Serpent. - This is another name for Satan and looks back to the temptation in the Garden of Eden. Satan is crafty in his deception. The Apostle John ties some of the names of Satan together in Rev 12:9,
"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
Dragon - This is another name for Satan that refers to his cruel, vicious character.
Rev 12:9,
"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
John also tells us in Rev 20:2-3 that this dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan will be bound for 1000 years and sealed in a bottomless pit.
"And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season."
The end of this dragon, or Satan, is foretold in Rev 20:10,
"And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
The Evil One - We can see that Satan is the wicked one in 1 John 5:18,
"We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not."
The word "wicked" used in this verse is the Greek Poneeros which has the meaning of the evil, wicked, or bad. Then in the book of John, John 17:15, "I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil." The evil here is referring to the evil one, Satan, and this is made clear in many other translations as they have translated the passage as "the evil one." In this verse Jesus is praying that His children should be kept from Satan, the evil one. Obviously Satan works against God's plan and God's children.
Angel of Light - In his letter to the Corinthian Church the Apostle Paul tells them that Satan can transform himself into an angel of light. Satan can transform himself into a minister or righteousness; he looks good, sounds good, but is a deceiver, working against God's plan. Even the angels in Satan's kingdom can be transformed into ministers of righteousness.
2 Cor 11:14-15,
"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works."
Father of Lies - In the book of John the Apostle gives us a glimpse of the character of Satan and calls him the "father of lies."
John 8:44,
"Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
Murderer - In the book of John the Apostle tells us that Satan is a murderer,
John 8:44,
"Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
Roaring Lion - Peter referred to Satan as a "roaring lion" in 1 Peter 5:8,
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."
Ruler of Darkness - Satan is the prince or ruler of this world. Satan as we have seen above is the one who blinds unbelievers minds to the truth of God's Word letting them remain in darkness. Satan is the prince or ruler of darkness,
Eph 6:12,
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places"
Lucifer, Son of the Morning - This name is taken from Isa 14:12, "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!" The name literally means the shining one. This was the name of Satan in his unfallen condition. After the fall his names and titles reflect his new evil character.
Accuser of the Brethren - One of Satan's daily activities is to accuse believers before God. The Apostle John refers to him as the accuser of the brethren in Rev 12:10,
"And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night."
Abaddon, Apollyon - Abaddon is the Greek name and Apollyon is the Hebrew equivalent. The words mean destroyer - destruction. This title tells us of the destructive work of Satan as he attempts to destroy God's plan.
Rev 10:1,
"And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon."
The Temper - This is another title of Satan which characterizes him throughout the Bible.
Matt 4:3,
"And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread."
1 Thess 3:5,
"For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain."
