School principals oversee the running of a school, similar to that of a CEO. They do teacher assignments (who teaches what grade, who gets what assistant, etc), public relations with the community, student discipline (mostly for elementary schools, assistant principals usually handle it for middle and high schools), coordination of buses and emergency drills, attend workshops and meetings, and almost any other thing you can think of. It does not involve extremely high pay or pensions and it involves a lot of work and time. Obviously it doesn't include respect, judging from previous responses. Some people are better at their job than others. My dad retired as a school principal in October and there were very few people who disliked him (mainly those who didn't do their jobs) and many children told him over the years that they wished he was their father. If you have any other questions, email me and I'll see what I can do to get you a REAL answer from a principal, not from someone who is bitter about something.

if you mean school principal, its just to look pompous and stare down your nose at the poor minions beneath your exalted self.
of course if you are somewhat vertically challenged then you must find other ways to humiliate and punish those around you.
you will get a very big pension at the end though,so go for it.

To do whatever to uplift the reputation of the school/college, look over the running of the institution, look after its upkeep
