Enlightenment at any stage of life retains its eternal importance as it is the light in total darkness. Even at the time of last stage of ones life, if necessary, one could be enlightened.
In the battle field it was necessary because the warrior was a stranger to himself. He did not know his role and started giving wrong interpretation of life and its priorities. Krishna his friend, guide and philosopher had to clear his doubts so as to enable him to come out with his best in the battle field.
The War has been going on. It does not start and end. It is a continuous process.

You must be referring to the Bhagavad Gita, or Song of God, where Krishna spoke to Arjuna.
Arjuna was bewildered by the enormity and seemingly tragic devastation of the upcoming battle. Krishna had compassion for Arjuna's suffering and explained to him the nature of the eternal soul and what the purpose of life is for the embodied souls. By doing so, Krishna enlightened Arjuna and relieved him of his sorrow and fear.
The words of Krishna were written so that others down through time could benefit from these teachings as well.

Because this is where we all are, in the midst of the battleground, metaphorically. And this is where the Lord Krishna's teachings apply.
