Are there any bakers out there that can give me tips. I love to cook...esspassily desserts and stuff like that. Please give me any possible tips you have for me. I'm in Highschool.

But do you HAVE to be good at decorating food? I'm sort of bad with the frosting.

the best thing you can do is practice practice practice. start with some of the simpler things like muffins and basic cakes before you tackle a 5 tier wedding cake and that will give you a good solid base of skills.

don't worry, you'll never run out of people to eat what you bake, even if it isn't perfect.

as far as decorating goes, it's amazing what you can do with a little chocolate melted in a plastic bag. just nip the tip off the bag and drizzle it on pretty much anything to take it up town

good luck and happy baking !

one more thing: recipes are great but they're not gospel. if you think a dash of cinammon or a handful of walnuts is better than go for it and make that recipe your own.

Frosting is all practice and the kind of frosting you use as a professional is much easier to manipulate than home frosting. Get a pastry bag a huge bag of powdered sugar, some milk and practice with different tips. Taking a course at Michaels is a good idea too. The one thing that is different about baking is that it is a very exact science. You have to follow the recipe to the letter or it won't work. Your baking sodas and powder has to be fresh. Use the best quality butters and eggs.

Like everyone else said, practice makes perfect. We all pretty much sucked in the beginning, but with time, you figure out for yourself what works, and what doesn't. What might work for me, might not for you, and so with time you'll gradually add new techniques to your own repertoire. The main thing is to have fun! Because if you're not having fun...well....you'll easily stress out when things don't turn out how you want them to.

The biggest tip I can give you, is that in the beginning, do the recipe as is. Don't substitute anything. With time, you'll be able to figure out what can be successfully substituted, and what not...and why. Then you can go ahead and modify recipes to your hearts content!

Good luck!:)

Start out with easier, pretty much foolproof recipes, like shortbread or something...and as you get more confident, start experimenting with other types of recipes. That's what I did, and I've won a couple of blue ribbons for my baked goods. And as for the frosting bit? As long as you have fun. Sometimes, my frosting attempts look like a 2 year-old did it...as long as it tastes ok, most people don't really care how funny it looks. (And I mean Ha-ha funny)

You can always take a cake decorating course. Practice is the only thing that really makes anyone good.
