That's a question with no real answer. The taste of the single malt depends on the age, the barrel it was aged in and the distillery it came from. It varies from batch to batch.
Most of all, it all depends on your personal preference.

I like a lot of the single malts out there but if I have to pick only one bottle from a choice of many, I would pick Laphroiag 15. Again, personal preference.

By the way, it is also Prince Charles' favorite malt.

I have a marked preference for Islay and Orkney malts... within the category, it is difficult to determine a preference.

I love Port Ellen, but it is increasingly expensive and hard to find, since the distillery closed in 83.

Second best, I'd go for Laphroaig and the "darkest" (sherry casked) variant of Bowmore.

On the mainland, my favorites are Brora and Clynelish. (both of which have the peaty smoky flavor I like in Islays)

It's indivividual taste that decides. I like Loch Dhu.

the best in my opinion is a Macallan24, which is a rare find. But Macallan12 is previlant, pricey but very nice.
