Contrast is the difference in brightness between the brightest object and the dimmest object. If the contrast is low, everything becomes more like everything else, until you end up with just grey everywhere.

As someone mentioned, contrast is the scale of dimness and brightness in an image.
Low contrast is like a photograph taken without enough light. High contrast is just whited out. This is true of both black-and-white, and coloured images.
In a coloured image, proper colour balance involves something called 'saturation', as well. The higher the saturation, the more vivid the colour.
If you're using a graphics program, you need to balance the 'contrast', which is how the black and white are balanced, AND the 'saturation', which is how vivid your colours appear.
My advice is experiment. Don't use the 'Auto-Balance' feature. See what happens when you change the definitions manually.

Contrast is the relationship between the deepest black and the maximum highlight. High contrast means that mid tones are reduced and shadows fill in, resulting in loss of detail in shadow and highlight. Low contrast means that the mid tone range is extended and blacks do not reach the maximum density and appear grey and the highlights are not clean white and appear "muddy".

if you want to change the contrast of a color, you can either make it dark or light.. if you make it dark.. the highest level of darkness is black and if you want a light contrast .. the lowst color is white.
It's kind of like the brightness, but brightness is an overall tint
