If you have two pans where one is smaller than the other, then you can put the chocolate in the small pan and some water in the larger, Immerse the small pan in the water and place them on the stove like that, bringing the water to a low boil.
Or find a microwave safe container (preferably not plastic) to put the chocolate in, and on a low setting of about 50% power heat and stir the chocolate every 5 to 10 seconds until melted.

Go for the microwave -- I find that it works just as well. The trick is to take the bowl out of the microwave before the chips really look melted. As you stir them they will melt.

buy good chocolate chips and not the cheap ones, they have wax in them. Heat the chips slowly and pull the pan away from the heat just after they are soft and starting to melt, Then stir them and they will melt the rest of the way to a liquid chocolaty goodness.

melt some butter in a pan in low heat, sloowly add chips, stiring constantly....if you have a whisk, use it, a wodden or plastic spoon work as well. Not too much butter, a spoon full is enough. It helps to keep it from sticking to the pan. As well as the constant stiring. If you do it in high heat, the chocolate will stick quicker. Good luck and I hope it helps...

If you have stainless steel bowls or glass bowls that are heat tolerant you can take a pan, put water in it and set the bowl on top of the pan. You want to make sure the bowl just sits on the top of the pan, not immersed in the water. this will work as a double boiler.

Just microwave them. Place them in a microwavable dish (obvioulsy) and microwave on a meduium power for 30 seconds, then stir the chocolate about and do the same again until hot and molten (but not boiling).

The microwave is the easiest and fastest way. Use a glass bowl and be sure not to heat them to long and take them out and stir them. I do this all of the time.

a pot on the stove filled with water, then put a glass bowl on top with the chocolate in.
I have seen this done on 'ready steady cook' a cooking show in australia.
it really works too, i don't have a double boiler, so i tried the pot with a glass cooking bowl, and it worked.
