Yes, you may lose some minor things, but unlikely. Most average people don't even know how to use the other functions that would cause any lose when going to another version.

Not a lot of people have Office 2007 yet. I doubt Microsoft would make it so only Office 2007 files can only be opened with Office 2007. I think you should be able to open your files with Office 2003.

Save the word file as a Word 97-2003 document instead of just a Word document. This type of document is compatible for office 2003 and the other previous versions.

When sending or editing a document in Word 2007, and wanting to have it open someplace else using Word 2003 - when saving it and giving it a name, look in that box for a place that asks you "Save As Type", and choose the older version of Word. It should warn you if you are going to lose something in the translation.

You can always open an older version in the newer versions, but not always able to open a newer version in an older application.

Hope that helps.

Word 2007 uses a different extension (.docx instead of .doc), so the file will not automatically appear when you Open Files from Word 2003. However, if you change the Open Files to All Files, you will will find it and it will open.

When you save the document in 2007, check to see if you can save it in 2003 format. You might lose some esoteric functions, but everything common should be fine. It should work, but if not, save in text format instead.
