The cookie was purchased from German bakery around Christmas. It was dark in color, so most recipes list white sugar, so I am thinking a recipe with brown suger is what I need. Internet searching is all the same. Want authentic recipe !! Thanks.

I have one from an international cook book, I have never tried this one, but I like Zimtsterne too.

ZIMTSTERNE (cinnamon stars)

3 egg whites
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1 1/2 cups ground unblanched almonds
2 tablespoons flour
1/8 teaspoon salt

Beat egg whites in mixer bowl until soft peaks form. Add sugar, cinnamon, and lemon rind gradually, beating until stiff. Reserve 1/2 cup meringue; set aside fold almonds, flour, and salt into remaining meringue. roll a small amount at a time 1/4 inch thick on heavily floured surface. Cut with a floured star-shaped cookie cutter. Place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Frost each lightly with reserved meringue. Bake at 300 degrees for 20-30 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool.

I can't be positive, but are you sure it wasn't gingerbread?
