the best way to crack any nuts with any hope of keeping the nut whole is to use vise grip pliers & adjust the screw on the bottom so that it's just a wee bit tighter than what it would be if you put it on the nut & then tightened it to fit the nut. In other words put the nut in the vice grip & tighten the screw on the bottom so that it's just snug on the nut, OPEN the vice grip & tighten the screw just a LITTLE bit more & then crack the nut. CHANCES are that you have a much greater chance of getting successful halves from pecans & walnuts. My mother use to have my dad & I shelling all the walnuts for the fudge she always made at christmas every year. Yep.... it was YEARS ago!! She even use to go out & buy the 50 & 100 pound sacks of them! She made a lot of fudge!!
Hope this helps some, & remember patience & persistence is really important! Shelling nuts..fun family thing to do around the kitchen table or while watching TV in the evening!

You have to be very careful when cracking pecans. The easiest thing to do is to take them to a farmer's market or somewhere they sell large quantities of pecans and have them crack them for you with a machine. You can then pick them out of the shells and not worry about cracking the meat of the pecans

See if you can find a nutcracker. They should be stores that sell kitchen supplies. Very gently use it on the pecan. It helps to put the pecan in lengthwise instead of trying to crack it around the middle.
