Why would someone living in New York City be concerned about soil erosion on a farm or in a forest in another state

Maybe there's so many people in NYC that they need out-of-state food grown on farms and live in buildings made of wood that came from somewhere else?

Even people in NYC need food, wood to build with, etc. If the soil errodes away and no good farming land is available, the farmers will not be able to grow the crops we all depend on and this will affect us all. Same with timber, we rely on the land which grows the timber, if it erodes away, trees won't grow, more land will erode when there are no roots to hold on to it. Everyone should be concerned, or our way of life will drastically change. Who wants to rely on preservative laden, synthetic food and building materials forever? Our natural resources are slowly disappearing. I am not certain though, what the person in NYC could do to help, but he should think about it.
