It boils down to selfishness. This falls under the rubric of "misery loves company." Basically, a miserable person is jealous of happy people and tries to even the cosmic score in his or her own twisted view by bringing the happy person down to the same level of misery. It makes the sufferer feel better to have a companion who is of one mind, who "commiserates." In objective truth, however, this is a selfish gesture that only adds to the negativity in the universe. It never makes things even and can even hold the seeds of utter destruction. The idea that you can gain something by hurting others in this way is a cruel illusion. Best to check the urge at the door if possible.

It's disorder causing a spiral affect in others. People who do this don't realize it's like being addicted to something- a very short relief, followed by guilt that makes you feel worse than you did before.
