For the first time today, I ate some walnuts, as reccomended by a friend.
They're horrid. The skin is so hard it's actually like wood. I chewed it up and just got nasty sharp shards in my mouth.
I swallowed two to make it easier, but they're the size of golf balls so it wasn't easy. What's the point!

Wow, I do own a nutcracker, but I didn't know it really was for cracking nuts!

Had no idea.

Yo, bonehead! Use a 'Nut Cracker' to crack open the shell. If you don't have a nut cracker, use a small hammer, like the ones you use to crack a crab's outer shell. Remove the meat (inside of the nut for you) and eat that ... not the shell!

well gee !
I don't know what sort of walnuts you ate. Sounds like you are the sort of person who only eats foods that do not have to be chewed.
I buy a can of diamond walnuts every 2 weeks. I eat 1.3 Oz. a day. I eat them out of hand as a snack. They are great with organic apples, with celery also organic and goat cheese curds ( the soft sweet kind )
I eat them to keep my vascular system in shape. Walnuts have EFA's. Eating walnuts will reduce stroke risk (recent BBC article in their health section) I stopped haveing occular migraines after I started eating them every day 1.3 oz.

The most requested recipie: Sunset magazines famous Crunch Top Apple pie
make up a crust for one single crust deep dish 9" pie

6 medium tart apples peel & core slice thin, a little lemon juice to retard browning
crush 1 packet nabisco plain graham crackers crush about 3 more crackers. Measure out 1 cup graham cracker crumbs. Put in a bowl with 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup flour and 1/2 cup chopped or broken diamond walnuts and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon . Mix that all up very well
Lay the apples into a one crust raw pie shell. Put them close together and fill all the voids. I lay them like a pinwheel- packing them densely . That's why I slice them about 3/8 inch thick which is thinner than most apple pies..It bakes up more reliably. if the apples are too thick the crust will be burnt before the apples are done.
Then take the crumb mixture and sprinkle it on top of the apples.fill it in . Melt 1 stick butter and slowly drizzle it all over the powder topping. Bake 350 degrees for one hour . Foil the edges if its getting brown and the apples are still hard. That way your crust won't burn.
This pie is just fabulous. It has this wonderful cookie like crunchy buttery topping and all kinds of yummy flavors and aroma in it.
I took one to the beach and it was a real peak experience eating this delicious pie.

They used ot appear on top of something called a walnut whip. A cone of chocolate, filled with fondant (a bit like the stuff you get in a creme egg) and topped off with a walnut.

They were great - eat all the chocolate and fondant from the bottom until you get to the walnut and then chuck the disgusting thing in the bin - result!

I break up and sprinkle just a few of them on my corn flakes, with banana, currants, kiwifruit and lo-fat milk. Apparently they are the most nutritious of the nuts, next to almonds and I have noticed over the past two weeks that my hair has a sheen to it and my eyes feel clearer.
