We never used one. My step son was such a wiggle bug when he was born--and he never quit--that we felt nervous with him on a changing table, even though we never stepped away, not even for a second.

If you really want to get one, make sure that it has railings all the way around the top. Some of them don't, and even though you should never step away for a moment, that's not the point. The baby will bump his hands and/or legs against those railings, and it can help him/her to stay on there.

Make sure that it has an adjustable height (we actually saw one that went all the way down to 1 foot from the floor) so that your baby is always at a comfortable height. You don't want to be reaching up or down too much to change him.

Make sure that it has hooks for a diaper bag or a basket on each end, one for wipes and one for diapers, so you don't have to worry about forgetting to grab one.

Dressers can't be big enough... I always have baby clothes left folded on top (and it's a big dresser)
Change tables aren't necessary. I usually end up changing my baby on my bed (which is a good height for me), or on the floor.

I bought one that looks just like a normal dresser when you remove the changing pad. But we never use it. Downstairs we use the pack n play. Upstairs we just use a mat on the floor in our master bedroom. We're never in the nursery, baby sleeps in our room still.

they should be stable and not easily tipped over. the table sould have a belt that you can tie your child in with so that they wont roll off the table. get a table where the padding is part of the table and not just a padding that sits on top of the table.

I would say make sure its durable, and has a large top which can be used to display things after baby is bigger. I say large top cuz some kids don't potty train until like 3

shelves are important. I like them with a ledge or lip on them for when the are wiggly. Important to get one that is the height where you can change and keep your back straight...
