If you are his direct assistant, I think a gift certificate to a nice restaurant would be appropriate. It can be given in a nice Christmas card, and be nobody elses business...write something in it that shows your appreciation for the opportunity to work with him this past year, and you look forward to next year. Merry Christmas

I really don't think that it is necessary due to the company culture. Your co-workers are also right about setting a trend they they will have to follow.
I am the #2 in a medium sized company and have made it subtly clear to the staff that it is NOT wanted or expected. I'll take loyalty, input and a good work ethic all year rather than I gift that I probably do not need. Re golf balls most prefer a particular brand and unless you are CLOSE you will not know what kind to get.
I had an assistant once ( we had been a TEAM for about 5 years) and for "Bosses Day" one year she offered to drop off and pick up my laundry on her own time for the next year. I was traveling a TON, single and it was a HUGE help. I just gave her four signed, blank checks each month.
A simple card thanking him is good if you don't get too GUSHY.
Happy Holidays,
J

Only give him something if you really like and respect him. Under these circumstances will a gift be a sign of respect. Do not give him something just because he is the boss. I have an ex-boss that I send something to five years after working for him. I do not send anything to my current boss.

A token gift and make sure its nothing personal. Maybe an item for his desk would be a good choice.

Try golf balls and tees. Both are reasonably priced. If you want to take it a step further these items can be monogrammed for a nominal fee.

If your coworker don't do it, then I wouldn't do it either. If you want to do anything, I would give him a plate of Christmas cookies or some homemade bread. That is a nice way of saying thanks without it being too gifty.
