I went to the doctor last week for a sinus infection and got a course of antibiotics and some decongestants. I finished the decongestants last week and the antibiotics two days ago. Today I woke up and when I spit, the phlegm is DARK red, almost black or purple and is COMPLETELY blood... there is very little actual green/clear mucus. Should I be concerned? It's been happening all day and I don't feel fatigued or dizzy or nauseous or anything else. I'm completely normal except for this spitting. It comes from my sinuses, not my chest. Any ideas? Any suggestions?

See, it's hard to go to the doctor over here because I'm up in college. I have my Arabic final tomorrow, and I fly out Friday for home. If it continues I'm gonna see a doc back home, but I can't miss any more classes. I dont kno if this would be a good thing to fly with. I'll do my best to see a doctor after my Arabic final (it's in the morning) and I have a good 3-4 hours before my next class. Thats assuming this persists.

You need to go to a specialist that deals with sinuses and have him/her look at them. I hope you get well soon.

Bloody Sinuses

Sounds like you could possibly be having an allergic reaction to something. Try to think if you recently took medicine or vitamins??? You could possibly have a food allergy to something like wheat, eggs, nuts, shellfish, sulfa, gluten. I suggest start drinking lots of water and maybe take a 2 zyrtec D or 2 Benadryl. Unless you have a cold but that sounds more like a reaction. You can go to an allergist and they will be able to do a skin or blood test to give you more specifics about your condition. Hope this helps. Flushing your nose with salt water is a bad idea, especially if your mixing the solution yourself, it may burn your nose!!! and cause more irritation. However, you can warm lightly salted water in a pot on the stove and breath the steam a little at a time. Just holding your face over the pot will loosen up the congestion. And make sure it NOT boiling and take the pot off the stove and put it on a potholder or something on the counter. You can place a small towel over your head as you do this. But please be careful not to burn yourself. If you can't afford much right now, try your local county health department. And there is alway the ER. But I recommend the health dept b/c it would take hours to be seen in ER for your symptoms. Hope you feel better.

Red Mucus

Sinuses can bleed if they are aggravated and it is common with sinus infections. You may need another round of a different antibiotic or the decongestants may have dried your sinus too much. I hope you follow up with your MD again.

i read your second post.
you could try a simple flush. add a teaspoon of water to about 8oz or warm water and--believe it or not--snort it through your nose. it will come out of your mouth. it will flush the sinus, however. and...it burn just as it would if you got water up your nose in a pool. alot of peopl edo this regularly with a netty pot. you can just use a bowl. make sure you wash it before you use it. good luck on your test.

How do you know it comes from your sinuses? If it does, then it isn't uncommon to have blood tinged mucus with a sinus infection. However, it sounds as though it could be more than that, so I think you should go back to a qualified physician to get a professional opinion......don't take anyone's advice on here......this is your health you're talking about!

I have had the same problems but not all blood-just some. Take some sudaphed and see if it gets better. It may take your sinuses awhile to heal. However, you can always call your DR. or pharmacist to ask them any questions about this concern. I hope we are feeling better soon.
Take care.

Well, If I was you, I would go to the emergency room right away. Spitting up blood is no good. Watch yourself very close. Good Luck!!!
