A friend of mine managed to get one through an 02 shop but had to pay a £50 deposit which was refunded off a bill after 3 months.

If your credit is bad then networks will not offer you the option of leaving a deposit. Credit checks will say 'yes', 'no' or occasionally, 'yes, with a deposit.' It's rarely something you can negotiate yourself, rather an option a network will offer if you're a borderline 'yes'. If that is the case you've got two options:

1. Get someone else to sign up on your behalf, parent, sibling, etc preferably someone who is not living at your address. (Your poor credit rating is likely to affect everyone at your address.) You should be able to change the direct debit afterwards to your bank account, and maybe have your name added to the phone account. But officially the phone will belong to the other person.

2. Sort out your credit problems. There's some simple stuff that you can do that will improve your credit score. Being on the electoral roll at your address helps (talk to your local council), so does having a land-line phone.

It may be worth talking to a credit checking agency like Equifax (they've got a website) as they will have professional advice on this.

I had bad credit when I first moved to the UK because tehy couldn't be bothered tracking my history overseas. I got a contract with Vodafone but I had to pay a deposit of 150, I got it back six months later when I proved I would pay the bills on time

Why don't you just get a prepaid phone? I have a Virgin prepaid, I buy time in $20 blocks and it's 25 cents a minute for the first 10 minutes and then 10 cents a minute after that, local or long distance.

Yes you can but you have to pay a deposit. Actually a friend of mine paid $100. That guarantees that you'll be responsible paying the bills.
