For some really specific names, often they are related (like royal names, ie Plantagenet or Tudor), but names that come from professions or personal characteristics most likely aren't. (Smith is a profession - one could have been a goldsmith blacksmith, silver smith, etc - any sort of metal worker.) Jones comes from the name "John" and basically means "John's son" - and there were so many Johns running around back when people were adopting last names in the late Middle Ages they clearly weren't all the sons of the same guy John.
